The gifts of READING are proven to be fundamentally beneficial in all areas of life. As a matter of fact, from the time our kids are able to hear us first off especially, while they are in the womb, they are already hearing us read. In fact, they will hear reading even more so when they are in this World.

We learn so much from being Read to or Reading, which adds to our own abilities to write and share, and communicate.

I have always have been a fond reader for as long as I can remember, and still read hours and hours each week even now. Reading is a constant, part of my success in all areas of my life. I found some great information on why Reading is Important, Furthermore, I will share it with you and include that here:

Why Is Reading Important?

From time to time people have wondered why reading is important. There seem so many other things to do with one’s time than read. Consequently, reading is important for a variety of reasons. We will look at some of those fundamental reasons below, and it is important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills is not a sign of a low intelligence.

For example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read, is a very intelligent man. He graduated from High School and College and became a popular High School teacher and later a successful businessman and all without being able to read. Many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading although, when properly taught, most people can learn to read easily and quickly.

Now, if a man like John Corcoran can succeed without reading, why is reading important? You should really read Mr. Corcoran’s story to get the feeling of shame, loneliness, and fears that he experienced before he learned to read. He was able to succeed in spite of this major handicap all because he was a man of intelligence, ability, and determination. But, make no mistake, it was a handicap that made life harder and less enjoyable.

Why Is Reading Important?

1. Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society. There are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. That is a scary thought and especially for their children. Day-to-day activities that many people take for granted become a source of frustration, anger, and fear. Filling out applications becomes impossible without help. Reading road or warning signs is difficult and moreover following a map becomes a chore.

2. A person is limited in what they can accomplish without good reading and comprehension skills. Therefore poor reading skills increase the amount of time it takes to absorb and react in the workplace. And of course, Reading is a vital skill in finding a good job. Many well-paying jobs require reading and understand as a part of job performance. There are reports and memos which must be read and responded to. Therefore reading can be important in the difference in your earnings.

 

Reading Develops The Mind

3. A person is limited in what they can accomplish and do without good reading and comprehension skills. Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind is a muscle. It needs exercise too. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them to listen and learn.  Everyone wants to talk, but only a few can really listen. Not being able to listen can lead to losing your job to losing your wife. Reading helps children [and adults] focus on what others are trying to communicate.

4. A person who knows how to read can educate themselves in any area of life they are interested in. Why is reading important? It is how we discover new things. Books, magazines and even the Internet are great learning tools which require the ability to read and understand what is read. Also, we live in an age where we overflow with information, but reading is the main way to take advantage of it.

Reading Develops The Imagination

5. Reading develops the imagination… A person who knows how to read can educate themselves in any area of life and Non-readers never experience these joys to the same extent.

6. Read to your children, and stop every once in a while and ask them what they think is going to happen next. Get them thinking about the story.  Encourage them to illustrate it and make up a different story with the same characters if the really liked it.

 

Read Is Fundamental For Self Image

 

 

7. Reading is fundamental in developing a good self-image. Non-readers or poor readers often have low opinions of themselves and their abilities. They can perform poorly in other subjects because they cannot read and understand the material and so tend to “give up.” They feel isolated [everybody else can read – which isn’t true] and behavior problems can surface.

8. Granted reading is important because good reading skills, especially in a phonics reading program, improve spelling. Knowing how words, how they are spelled and their meanings will help tremendously later in life making them better readers. Besides when students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling comes easier. Also, reading helps to expand the vocabulary. Also reading new word put in their minds are there when they need them.

 

Reading Changed The Destiny Of Mankind

9. There is an old saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” The Civil War is the proof of that saying our Constitution came from words. Therefore, In addition, people who can not read and do their own research for that reason reading is of the utmost importance. This shows us why reading is so very important for everyday life.

10. For example, some governments oppose free and honest communication through reading. Some countries have also banned books of any kind. Our own constitution was written from words long ago and are still in use today. For example, written even longer ago and all because of words and reading was The Holy Bible.

 

Reading Is The Building Block Of Life

11. Then again why is reading important because  Reading is important they are words that are spoken and written and are the building blocks of life. You are, right now, the result of words that you have heard or read and believed about yourself this includes people, families, relationships, and nations. Think about reading and you will understand and know why it is so important.

According to Jonathan Kozol in “Illiterate America,” quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,'” the three main reasons people give for wanting to read are:

1. To read the Bible, The Bible is the most read book there is and if you want to read the Bible you need to learn to read.
2. To read books and newspapers, and magazines                                                                                                                                                3. To help their children.
